Though MSU Libraries remain closed to the public due to COVID-19, we are preparing to welcome students this fall, and we are working on changes inside our Library to welcome people safely. Our goal is to reopen to the public August 24. Until then (and after), we will continue to offer virtual services. Many resources remain available. Please see our Online and Distance Learning resource page for specific Library resources. Reference services are still available via chat and phone. We do have temporary policies for returning/renewing material.

In 2006, the Michigan State University received a gift of 5500 pages of historic Chicago Tribune. The dates of these pages range from 1880-1940 and focus on the ca. 12,000 images represented by the paper, not merely black and white images commonly used, rather the important and at times pioneering colorful images from masters like Grant Wood and Mary Casset and famed cartoonist, John T. McCutcheon. This collection of scanned images and underlying database offers access to a rich set of cartoons, photographs, illustrations, advertisements, etc., in hopes of enticing scholars to visit East Lansing to see the original print artifacts carefully conserved and housed in the Michigan State University Library’s Stephen O. Murray and Keelung Hong Special Collections. With scores of patents to its credit, the Chicago Tribune Co. helped shape the way newspapers tell their stories through the use of color and we hope that our efforts help you to further explore visual innovations in newsprint.

Researchers will discover important and unique resources for the study of cookery and food. The collection features over 7,000 cookbooks and food related items from as early as the sixteenth century up to the present from all continents of the world.

Special collecting emphasis is on contemporary cookery of the Americas, including the United States; African American; Jewish American; Caribbean, Latin and South American; and the influence of West African food and diet on the Americas. The Michigan Cookbook Project is an attempt to collect all cookbooks published in the state. In addition to cookbooks there are strong resources in diet, health, and nutrition from the very old to the latest diet fad.

Please visit the Feeding America: Historic American Cookbook Project and the Digital & Multimedia Center's digital collection of Feeding Michigan Cookbooks websites for more information.

The Veterinary Medicine Historical Collection at MSU is one of the largest and finest collections of its kind in the nation and possibly the world. The collection features some 1,400 manuscripts and books covering the arts and practices of the veterinary profession from as early as the fifteenth century.

Today, MSU's Veterinary Medicine Historical Collection continues to grow in size and prestige. Recently an extremely rare sixteenth-century Latin translation of the Greek manuscript Kynosophion, the first work on the care of dogs, was acquired.

To view this collection's items, please visit its site.

    Fencing

Over the years the Stephen O. Murray and Keelung Hong Special Collections Division in the MSU Libraries has been enriched by the generosity of friends and donors. One of the finest examples of this generosity is the Charles and Ruth Schmitter Fencing Collection, the gift of Charles Schmitter, MSU's retired fencing coach and professor emeritus of health and physical education, and Ruth, his wife. Now numbering almost 600 titles in thirteen languages spanning four centuries, this unique research collection rivals any in the country in size, quality, and breadth.

To see digitized pieces of the collection, visit the Digital and Multimedia Center's Digital Fencing Collection.

For more information, see the MSU Libraries' Special Collection website's Fencing Collection.
